President Rafael Correa served notice this week
that his government will not tolerate US interference in Ecuador. A presidential
commission published the findings of a report into the CIA's “infiltration" of
Ecuador's intelligence service and its “full knowledge" of Colombia's
cross-border raid on 1 March. The timing of the publication, days before the US
presidential elections, was designed to send a clear message of intent to the
incoming President about Ecuador's independence. Correa followed up the release
of the report by stressing that Ecuador would lose “absolutely nothing" once the
US Southern Command leaves its base in Manta next year, dismissing suggestions
that this would lead to an increase in drug-trafficking.End of preview - This article contains approximately 595 words.
